History and Development of Yerevan Haybusak University
Yerevan Haybusak University (YHU) was founded in 1990 by the renowned Armenian biologist, Professor and Academician Levon Harutyunyan. During the post-Soviet transformation of Armenia’s education system, YHU became one of the country’s first non-state educational institutions, laying an important foundation for the development of private higher education.
The University began its activities with three main faculties: Medicine, Economics, and Food Technology. In 1997, the Faculty of Humanities was established. On March 20, 2003, the Haybusak Cooperative Institute was reorganized into Haybusak University LLC.
As the University continued to develop, several educational institutions became part of its structure over the years. In 2009, the H. Lazaryan Institute of Oriental Studies and International Relations joined Haybusak University, followed by the L. Kalashyan Armenian Open University and the Roslin Institute of Design in 2011. In 2012, Anania Shirakatsi University, including its Gyumri branch, became part of the University, followed by the Institute of Ecology and Economics in 2015.
In 1995, the University acquired ownership of a building located at 6 Abelyan Street in Yerevan, which subsequently developed into the main infrastructure supporting its educational, scientific, and professional activities. In 2006, the University also acquired a second building at 15 Griboyedov Street in Yerevan to expand and improve the facilities available for education and work.
An important milestone in the development of the University’s infrastructure was the opening of its university clinic in 1996, offering services in dentistry and medical cosmetology. In 2006, a modern, fully equipped fitness center also became available to students, staff, and other members of the university community.
In the same year, 2006, the International Academy of Education was established, bringing together Yerevan Haybusak University, its college, high school, and other affiliated educational institutions.
Since 1997, the University has actively participated in international education exhibitions held in Spain, India, Syria, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries.
In 2001, the University obtained state accreditation, enabling its graduates to receive state-recognized diplomas.
Throughout its 35-year history, the University has received numerous awards and certificates of recognition, including an award from Armenian Television and Radio, awards from the Baze Pan-Armenian Youth Gathering, certificates of commendation from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia and the State Language Inspectorate, among others.
